Why belonging matters as much as revision technique

In more than two decades in education, first as Head of Science, now running Science Cafe, I've watched the same pattern play out again and again. A student who feels safe in a room learns. A student who feels like an outsider in that same room, taught by the same teacher, using the same materials, often doesn't. Not because they can't. Because their brain is too busy managing how unsafe or unseen they feel to have much left over for photosynthesis or moles.

A new government-commissioned study has just put numbers to something a lot of us in this field have known for years.

What the research found

The study, School Belonging and Attainment at Key Stage 4, was carried out by Pallavi Banerjee at the University of Cambridge for Government Social Research and published this month. It looked at the relationship between how much pupils feel they belong at school and how well they perform at GCSE.

The finding is stark. Moving from strongly agreeing to disagreeing that you belong at school is associated with an 8-point drop in the Attainment 8 score. That's roughly a full GCSE grade lost, spread across eight subjects. Not one bad exam. A grade gone from every single subject a student sits.

The study is careful to flag a limitation worth noting: the belonging survey and the GCSEs were administered in the same year, so this shows a strong link rather than a definitive cause-and-effect relationship. But the pattern lines up with everything most teachers, tutors, and parents already see day to day.

Who feels it least

The groups reporting the lowest sense of belonging are exactly the groups many of us spend our careers advocating for:

Girls report belonging at a noticeably lower rate than boys (58% versus 66%).

White students report belonging less than their Asian or Black peers (60%, compared with 70% and 72%).

Disadvantaged students eligible for free school meals are less likely to feel they belong than their classmates.

And SEND students report significantly lower belonging than pupils without SEND, alongside bullying levels that are statistically higher than the OECD average.

That last one stopped me. Every family I work with at Science Cafe has, in some way, been shaped by that statistic. A child who has already been made to feel different, or singled out, or misunderstood, walking into a science classroom that asks them to sit still, keep quiet, and absorb content at a pace that isn't built for how their brain works.

Why this matters beyond the classroom

Government guidance now expects schools to monitor pupils' sense of belonging and engagement by 2029. That's a welcome shift. But it's a slow one, and it doesn't undo what a child is feeling this term, in this classroom, ahead of this mock exam.

This is exactly why the way we teach matters as much as what we teach. Small groups instead of a hall of thirty. A tutor who has time to notice when a student has switched off, and why. Materials built with neurodivergent learners in mind from the start, not adapted as an afterthought. None of that is a nice extra sitting on top of good science teaching. Based on this research, it might be the thing that determines whether the science teaching lands at all.

What this means if you're a parent

If your child is dreading a subject, or seems to switch off the moment they walk into a particular classroom, it's worth asking not just "do you understand this topic" but "do you feel like you belong in that room." The two are more connected than most revision timetables account for.

It's also worth knowing you're not imagining it if your child, particularly if they're neurodivergent, has been treated differently by peers or by a system that wasn't built with them in mind. The data now backs up what you've likely felt for a while: belonging isn't a soft add-on to education. It's close to the foundation of it.
